Probably the grindiest course of all time in the entire accountancy curriculum. I took a lighter load for the semester when I was taking this course and still felt like I was constantly running low on time in part because I had to put in so much time and effort to practice and understand the content for this course (not to mention all the continuous assessments…). That being said, I do think you’ll be rewarded for the grinding, cos the entries are actually quite standard once you get the hang of it. Speaking of this, I highly recommend compiling the consolidation format, the format for translating financial statements to a different currency, and all the entries you need for the various transactions (or getting such compiled notes from other students) because in exam, you will not have time to read through the illustrations again to sieve out what you need. I tried doing that in midterms and all I did was confuse myself and waste my time lol.Getting the textbook is a must for this course unfortunately because the discussion questions will ask you to refer to the textbook for some of the questions instead of putting the questions in the document itself. I don’t get why they do that but it is what it is. At least for the semester I took it, I could just refer to a slightly older edition of the textbook for the questions rather than buy a brand new one.
Similar to AC2101, you get a set of questions separate from the discussion questions for the group project and need to complete them and present them as a group. It can be a bit rushed since you pretty much have around 1 week to do it (the content required for the project is usually taught around 1 2 weeks before you need to submit the group’s answer to the tutor) but it’s doable, as long as everyone does their part.
The quizzes were kinda sporadic. Though there were 4 quizzes, they weren’t actually spaced out evenly. There was a quiz that covered content from seminar 1 to 2, then 1 to 3, and then 1 to 4 which were all within the first half of the semester. Then there is one final quiz which covers content from seminars 1 to 8 which has to be done somewhere near the end of the semester. I found it kinda upsetting when I first found out about the number of quizzes throughout the semester, but looking back, it also gave me chances to verify whether I actually had the concepts down, which was good since I was quite unsure of myself with how difficult the content is. Also, you get 2 attempts to do the quiz and they take your highest score, so that was nice. That being said, I don’t know why they have both these quizzes and midterms, especially when the midterms was only 10%. Quite a number of people just skipped it.
This course has lecture videos that you can watch prior to the lesson to learn the content, but whether you watch them or just read the lecture slides is up to you. Personally, I thought the content for the very first week was an insane info overload when I was just coming out of my holiday mood from summer holidays (there were around 90 slides’ worth of content… yikes). It pretty much made me dread the course for the rest of the semester. : I wish the lecture content was spaced out a little better in the first few weeks. Also, I thought the first few weeks’ slides were really confusing because the lecture videos didn’t really align with the slides. Later weeks’ videos didn’t have this issue, thankfully.
I recommend Dr Lim (my tutor) for the seminar class. He was very nice and helpful whenever I asked him questions about the content and discussion questions. He also explains the content quite well in his content recap before going through the discussion questions and provides some supplementary notes where he simplifies things from the lecture or provides additional examples of journal entries based on the given illustrations. He asks everyone to submit their answers for discussions questions as a group though so do come prepared for that.
Final Grade: B (god bless the bell curve idk how I got this grade either LMAO)
