took this mod in sem 1 of AY2021/22, turns out instead of chinese flute, we are learning guzheng due to covid safe distance measurements and restrictions. this mod will be easy if you have guzheng background, the class that i’m in (8 students) had 2-3 experienced players, while the remaining are either pure beginners who are motivated to do well or just for the sake of attending the class.

the practical and theory lectures are all taught by ms lim choo li, she’s very approachable and friendly so you wouldn’t feel like you’re being judged when you clear your doubts with her/ when asked to perform a small part of the piece in front of the class.

overall this is a fun and great mod, just that you need to take your time off your free time to go and practice guzheng if you do not have prior knowledge of playing it.

Was a very small class. Initially did not like this as the module information stated we were going to learn the dizi, but it ended up as a guzheng class instead. Take this module if you are musically inclined, most people have a background in guzheng or Chinese music in general and so will naturally out do those with no music background. However the prof was very kind and patient towards the newbies, although I feel that you can also learn the instrument by joining NTUCO instead with no added stress of getting a good grade. For newbies you should focus on the learning journals to pull up your grade. As with other music electives in NIE (with the exception of Malay music), a lot of time and dedication is needed outside lesson hours to practice what we have learnt. Got an A for this in the end but I have CO background, not sure how those without any music background fared. No bell curve for this module.

Took this mod in semester 1 of AY2019/2020. I was looking forward to learning Chinese flute but ended up in a Guzheng ensemble of 9 instead. Lectures were conducted in both Mandarin and English by Ms Lim Choo Li. Most people taking this mod had some form of prior knowledge and were motivated to do well. My batch would book the music room to practise what we learnt that week.

    Assessment:
    1. Learning Journal in English (50%) 7 lessons (Both Practical & Combine Lecture) + 1 Recital
    2. Practical & Performance (Guzheng 50%)

    Final grade: B+
