BS1002 BIOPHYSICAL CHEMISTRY (3.0 AU)

The aim of this course is to introduce the physical principles that govern chemical systems. It aims to enable students to apply this knowledge to various biological systems with emphasis on biochemical reactions and processes, and demonstrate their understanding of the concepts in biochemical laboratory work. The course will give a solid grounding for understanding and use of biophysical techniques which will be needed in later studies. The course has an emphasis on the mathematical analysis of biological chemistry processes.

Took in y1s1 in AY2017 2018, A . Understanding is key to an A! Because this was a core, and my bio classmates hated physics, the bell curve would be in your favor if you actually grasped physics concepts easily. Although it has bio phy and chem in the name, there is nearly 0 biology in this whole course. It is mostly a combination a phy chem concepts, that is rather intuitive.

Im sure most of yall who are reading this dont have a choice (because youre BS students) but for those who do, take this mod for an easy A only if youre excellent at understanding physical chem concepts because most BS students wouldnt do well for this mod (may the curve be in your favor)

I took this mod AY20/21 Sem 1. With lectures being online and tutorials being held offline in classes. The topics revolves mostly on Thermodynamics for the first half before mid terms and then more on spectrometry for the second half of the semester.
Prof Mu uploaded the prerecording and I found those very useful as I can play it on my own speed (aka rewinding again and again every time I didn’t catch or understand what is going on). After comparing the prerecordings with the online lectures he delivered, I find it almost the same, with the prerecordings being a smoother version. Hence, I actually sticked to only watching the prerecordings as it covered the same topics anyways.

Difficulty-wise, it is difficult period. The only thing that actually led me to having a good grade in the end is probably because the whole class was doing as badly / a bit worse than myself.

It would be best to go through the tutorial questions, attend the tutorials, and know how to do those questions by heart. Else, you’ll start thinking of dabaoing this mod:)

Took in AY20/21 Sem 1 (aka online lectures). First ever lecture I had and I was lost af. Prof copy pasted stuff from a textbook into his notes, most of which is only useful if you know what’s going on, but I didn’t :”) Prof can’t teach for nuts in an online format but I heard he’s really good teaching ftf. This mod will make you rethink your choice of course.

I was really hoping to be rid of math and physics once I reached Uni, but turns out it isn’t the case. While many are complaining about the difficulty of this module, I personally find it manageable (albeit boring). It’s good to have a solid foundation in O’ Level Physics and H2 Chemistry for this module, even better if you were a H2 Physics student because you’d breeze through (almost) everything like a boss.

The exam format is as follows:
30% Lab Reports – submit 3 in total, so 1 lab report is 10% each?
    70% Finals – MCQ

Took this module in AY18 Sem 1. First lecture already talks about quantum physics. This is the most difficult mod I’ve ever took, 90% of the time I don’t understand the content, tips: pray to bell curve god.
