BS2002 MICROBIOLOGY (3.0 AU)

This course aims to introduce the general concepts of microbiology and its impact on the environment and society. The course will examine the range of applications of microorganisms in industry and as part of this you will learn the basic cellular organisation and function of key microorganisms and understand the special requirements for microbial growth especially in how it relates to control of microorganisms in the environment or during infection. The course will help you to understand the genetic mechanisms and physiological responses that drive interactions between microorganisms and their environment.

Year Taken: AY 15/16, Sem 1

    10% Tutorials (4 were submitted)
    15% Mid-terms
    15% Lab report
    60% Finals

I personally found the labs rather refreshing compared to the labs that we had been doing for the previous semesters. The lab report was a combined one based off a worksheet-style booklet available to us in the beginning of the semester filled with questions, result tables and spaces for drawings. However, much of the module felt like fact after fact being poured upon us and the lecture notes were mostly rather thick. It was also quite “japalang” with numerous lecturers (6), different teaching styles and rather messy organisation of lectures.

I do not think I did very well for most of the tutorials after class discussion so if it is more answer-based rather than effort-based I would probably not have done well in that component. Midterms were decent but finals was pretty bad. The entire paper was multiple answers and I found myself doubting myself and there were some parts especially water treatment that I swear had not been touched upon.

    Things to improve on:
    – Shifting focus to macroscopic view instead of getting caught up in tiny details, and making sure I check through everything carefully once (for tutorial-based)
    – Going for all lectures (I skipped 4-5)

    Grade: Ok/Eh

By right, this mod is fairly easy, probably the easiest out of all the 2k core mods. However, that seems to also be the reason why it becomes the most neglected mod during your y2s1. Content is easy to digest (if it’s not an 830am lecture) , listening to online lecture is good enough and might be better due to the accent of the male prof. Pull it down to y1 if you’re able to so that you won’t neglect the mod in y2 (biochem2 itself feels like 3 mods). When I took it in 2019, the grp work was easy with us just needing to do a presentation on any microbio topic. The only thing bad is the whole mod covers a lot of content (100 slides lectures kind) but very touch and go. So it may be harder to memorise the info for some people, but first few lectures are quite basic and touches on a lot of fundamental bio knowledge.
