This was a fun class, although I disliked the online MCQ quizzes. In NTU, online quizzes basically mean collusion and cheating, making the bell curve steeper than it was actually supposed to be. This was a class meant for Year 2 students to clear as part of the GER-CORE requirement, but as I was on exchange in Year 2 Sem 2, I had to do this class as a Year 3 student.

We were tasked to get 15 participants to do some qualitative interviews. Dr. Yingying gave full marks for the research component for those who did 15 participants.

As a Linguistics student competing against non-Linguistics students, I was expecting to do well for the quizzes. Unfortunately, I didn’t do as well as I thought I would be because I read too deep into the MCQ choices and made a lot of unnecessary mistakes. I was never good at MCQs to begin with. However, I did very well for the project, which saved me.

Really fun mod about how languages and language policies in Singapore evolved over the years. The lectures on the description and analysis of Singlish is also really cool and I just feel kinda proud to be a Singaporean (?) Prof Yingying is also very engaging and there I never felt bored in any of her lectures, whether it was conducted in-person or online (transitioned due to Covid).
The mod consists of 2 quizzes and a project (survey + analysis and write up). Don’t be deceived by the prospect of mcq quizzes tho! The questions are quite tricky. Overall, I do find this mod really unique and I would encourage anyone looking for a Singapore Studies core to take this.
